CHAPTER 19 | IMPRISONED

I looked at Ashley, letting what she’d just said sink in. But I still didn’t understand.

“How is that even possible?” she asked in response to her own confession. “I don’t know you. We’ve never met, but I’ve been dreaming of you for weeks. When I wake up, there’s this annoying itching sensation in my brain as more information from the dreams comes back.” Ashley pointed at her head, her eyes glazing over as she relived the moments she was talking about. “The more I try to push them away, the more incessant the sensation becomes until it burns. That’s...not normal.” She looked down at the photo, running her index finger over the image of our son. It seemed she wasn’t really looking for answers, or maybe I was just too shocked to formulate any right now. “And yet there’s this.” Her eyes found mine again. “Where did you get this?”

I sighed sadly. “It was taken shortly before the accident.”

“Accident?”

I nodded, but didn’t say anything else. She’d been resistant to hearing me before. It was possible I’d have to let her lead this conversation if she was going to accept the truth for what it was.

“I still don’t understand.” She lifted her face, her blue eyes filled with questions. “I don’t know you, but this photo says otherwise. How is that even possible?”

I over-estimated the distance, and it hit the far end of the table before sliding off and onto the floor with a clang. I shrugged it off, deeming it low on my list of priorities.

Ashley stood up, and my posture stiffened, waiting for her attack. She only looked at me, but I kept my guard up, because I was afraid the second I didn’t, she might strike.

It was what I would do if the roles were reversed.

“It’s all so confusing,” she said, her forehead creasing. “All I’ve ever known was that your kind is evil. That they should be eradicated...”

“That’s not all you’ve ever known,” I offered, staying in place as she walked toward me.

She stopped six inches from me, looking up and meeting my gaze. Her blue eyes danced back and forth between mine, and she swallowed thickly. “It’s not?”

Without really thinking it through, I reached out and took her hand. She flinched at first, but allowed it. My entire body relaxed as the familiar hum that accompanied Ashley’s touch thrummed through me. It was as though the last fifteen years never happened. Like we’d never been apart. I was captivated by her intense blue eyes, and nothing else seemed to register.

“I know everything is a little hazy, Ash”—she inhaled a shaky breath, and I saw a glimmer of recognition in
